During their visit, they introduced students to the peculiarities of a translator’s work, shedding light on the often unseen but essential processes that go into delivering high-quality translations.

What Does It Take to Be a Professional Translator?

Milda and Rusnė highlighted the skills and qualities that make a professional translator stand out in today’s fast-paced language services industry. It’s not just about knowing two languages fluently. Professional translators must:

🔹 Master the subject matter – Whether it’s legal, medical, technical, or marketing texts, understanding the field is critical to delivering accurate translations.
🔹 Write clearly and naturally in the target language – A good translation should never feel like a translation. It should read as if it was originally written in the target language.
🔹 Be detail-oriented and thorough – Even the smallest mistake can change the meaning of a sentence. Accuracy is key.
🔹 Keep learning – Language evolves, industries change, and new tools emerge. Lifelong learning is part of the job!
🔹 Use technology wisely – Translation software and tools like CAT (Computer-Assisted Translation) tools, terminology databases, and QA checkers help ensure consistency and efficiency.

The Role of Quality Assurance (QA) in Translation

One of the core themes of Milda and Rusnė’s presentation was Quality Assurance (QA), an integral part of LINGVOBALT’s workflow.

QA is not just a final spell-check. It’s a structured process that involves:

Terminology management – Making sure the right terms are used consistently throughout the document.
Proofreading and editing – A second (and often third!) pair of eyes reviews the translation to catch errors and improve readability.
Consistency checks – Ensuring style, tone, and terminology are applied uniformly across all documents, especially in large projects.
Client feedback integration – We always listen to our clients and apply their feedback to future projects to continually raise our standards.
