Consecutive interpreting is a type of interpreting when a speaker pauses to allow an interpreter to repeat what has been said in the target language before continuing. Consecutive interpreting does not require any special equipment and it is relevant for certain kinds of meetings (working lunches, small groups, field trips, etc.).
Simultaneous interpreting is a type of real-time interpreting when an interpreter works in a soundproofed booth with at least one colleague. The speaker in the meeting room speaks into a microphone, the interpreter receives the sound through a headset and renders the message into a microphone almost simultaneously. Simultaneous interpreting is frequently used in high level international meetings and conferences.
Whisper interpreting is when an interpreter sits next to the person needing to understand the foreign language and whispers what’s being said in their ear. The aim of such interpreting is to provide personal language support to an individual within a group without impacting the group as a whole.
